Immortality... is it within our reach? While that decision has yet to
be made, science has advanced in its research to detect why some people
are living longer. It appears that all of us can allow the wisdom of
aging to illuminate our paths without the signs of aging glaring back in
the mirror. So why is it that graceful Aunt Beth has survived well into
her 90s feeling more spry and looking years younger than many of her
friends? Why it could be Telomeres my friend!
Senescent cells may
now be able to run a marathon, so to speak, without tiring or shortening
quickly. It is the shortening of the cells according to DNA studies by
three US researchers who won the 2009 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their
work on telomeres and aging; with a new Danish study confirming their
findings. You see cells as they divide lose some of their length off the
end of their chromosomes, called telomeres. Stem cells however, are
superstars because they overcome this shortening effect. How do they do
this? Enzymes! Because of an enzyme called telomerase, stem cells can,
if I may be so bold, become immortal!
So what is it that
prematurely shortens our telomeres beyond the aging factor? Things you
might guess including smoking, obesity, sedentary lives, malnourishment,
stress, and violence specifically. How do we keep our telomeres nice
and long so we can live longer healthier lives? Do your best to live a
healthy life in general and avoid the obviously detrimental things that I
just mentioned. In addition, here is what science is focusing upon to
help maintain longer telomeres:
Take anti-oxidant supplements and
eat foods rich in antioxidant nutrients. How do you know if a food is
rich in anti-oxidants? Nature yells at you with color; foods are bright
yellow, orange, red, blue, or purple in general. It is the bright colors
that give us a signal that vibrant lives require vibrant foods! (Thanks
to my mentor Dr Bernard Jensen for that info so many years ago.) Next,
include supplements such as resveratrol, pycnogenol, vitamins A,C, and
E, cartotenes, etc. Also take extra Vitamin D, especially if you are
indoors too often. Also, research is proving that individuals with
higher levels of Omega 3,6 and 9 have longer telomeres so each your
fish, some raw nuts and seeds, olives, olive oil, take your flax and
perhaps add krill oil, flax oil or fish oil to your supplement list; or a
total Omega supplement all in one. Stop eating animal foods at every
meal unless your digestion is close to perfect. The putrefaction of
animal food sources that are not completely broken down causes toxic
build up and oxidation of cells. Be sure you are eliminating fully and
often each day. Drink adequate amounts of purified water and stay away
from processed foods, sugary foods and foods in general that detract
from life.
Now you need to get moving! Be sure to exercise every
day. Walk walk walk your way back into health. You can swim or bike,
play a sport or just rebound on a mini-trampoline, practice yoga or thai
chi... but GET MOVING!
Finally, do something to reduce your
stress and avoid violence in general. A study by Duke University showed
that children who were exposed to violence in the home or at school had
shortened telomeres! That means those little people are going to age
faster. Be kind to one another, do what you can to uplift humanity. If
you are lonely get a pet, make new friends, get out to the store or the
library and chat with others. Write letters to our troops and contribute
your time or energy in some good way. When we do things that help
others we create an uplifting mood for ourselves. Life is so much better
when people are good to themselves, others, animals and plants... the
planet.
In the coming years you will read more about the
importance of having longer telomeres, in the meantime do your own
research and practice the age prevention tips here for starters.
